Mayfield Morris and Sword
is a women's Morris dancing team from
Palo Alto, California. Founded in 1985 by
Jody McGeen, formerly of New York's Ring
o' Bells Morris, Mayfield is well known
in the San Francisco Bay Area, and across
the country, for its elegant, precision
dancing, its raspberry vests, and its
spirit of fun. And now we've got an
elegant, precise, raspberry web page,
which we hope you find fun (or, at the
very least, informative).
Yeah, we darn well better
have a web page, seeing as how we're
located in the heart of Silicon Valley.
In fact, the "Mayfield" in our
name is a reference to the town of
Mayfield, a hard-drinking, hard-partying
city that refused to ban liquor in
response to Leland and Jane Stanford's
requests. So, the Stanfords founded a new
town, Palo Alto, where they banned
alcohol, and all the students would go
over to the town of Mayfield when they
wanted to get schnockered. Palo Alto and
Mayfield merged in 1925, and the Mayfield
area (California Avenue and environs, to
locals) remains a popular spot for
Stanford MBAs, local dotcom
(ex-)millionaires, social activists, and
drunken revelers staggering over from the
university campus (still!). We'll leave
it to the reader to further speculate on
the synergies between the team and the
town. . .
